A celebration of Beethoven at his romantic and dramatic best.

Beethoven is not known as a man of the theatre, with only one opera (Fidelio) under his belt, and he struggled mightily with it. Leonora is one of the many overtures Beethoven tried out for Fidelio, and this particular version distils the opera’s powerful plot into an intense fifteen minutes. Yet Beethoven also wrote some brilliantly dramatic orchestral overtures for theatrical productions, including the tragic Coriolan, and the spirited, ultimately triumphant Egmont. His Violin Concerto, meanwhile, is one of the most beautiful and quietly revolutionary pieces he ever composed. The multi-talented Eugene Tzikindelean conducts and takes the solo part in one of Beethoven’s best-loved works.
